Suggesting doing so will get rid of piracy is simply naive. Citing costs related to maintaining two separate delivery models is pure hogwash. I expect that after these increases, they will phase out permanent licenses completely.Their stated reasons for doing this seem pretty disingenuous. In other words, if you don't move over to the vastly more expensive subscription options laid out, they will be dramatically increasing maintenance dues.
(I appreciate that some will not agree.)My objection, by itself, is meaningless, however. Unlike Adobe's move to subscription pricing, Autodesk is doing in the most user unfriendly way possible. I simply can't afford to deal with punitive and valueless pricing as they are putting forward. If Autodesk does not change its position, I will find another piece of software to do what I must failing that, I will walk away from this business. Fundamentally, though, they want to take our permanent licenses away from us one way or another.I, personally, have had enough. Since the development in Autodesk software has dramatically decreased over time, one can only assume that this new model will only lead to higher costs with dramatically less value per dollar.

We use Autocad and Revit while utilising rendering software (3d Studio Max).We invested in several seats of Revit/ Autocad at over RM20,000 each which came with perpetual licences. From day one our most important software was produced by Autodesk. Our work involves using CAD software and graphic software to illustrate our designs. We offer architectural services to a number of clients in Malaysia.
Indeed Autodesk chose to package multiple software together, not desired by users. This was exemplified by the software becoming slow and unwieldy to use. We accepted this arrangement and have paid the Maintenance plan on our seats for many years.Unfortunately, Autodesk over this whole period has been more concerned with profit than advancing the software by addressing issues raised by customers.
Maintenance plans would be phased out and incentives were given for customers to switch to Subscription. Autodesk's response, rather than listening to customers, was to introduce a subscription system. The software in turn became so heavy that it would crash.For us, we preferred to use older versions of the software which offered speed and efficiency.With Autocad focussed on forcing customers to pay more for less efficient software, many customers rebelled refusing to pay the maintenance plan fee and simply using seats with older versions under the perpetual licences.In 2017, the long term business practices of Autodesk, and negative reaction from their clients lead to their financial difficulties. Customers had no choice but to accept software they did not want or need into their existing licence agreements.
This is not what Autodesk want. As the Maintenance Plan was being phased out we decided in an uncertain market to stop paying the maintenance fee and use the 2018 version of the software under the perpetual licence. Therefore the financial burden is more acute.Autodesk decided to stop the Maintenance plan to pressure companies into Subscription. At Stylom S/B we need all our users to access Revit. Failure to pay the Subscription would mean use of the software would not be permitted, unlike the situation with the perpetual licence.Not many companies use Revit and if they do, they only utilise a small portion of their seats.
He told me they are prepared to forget the breach if we buy 2 seats of Subscription based software. I spoke to Vineet of Autodesk in California by phone. You can imagine our surprise when Autodesk contacted us saying we have used their software illegally. We have 7 seats of Autodesk Design Suite and another 2 seats of 3d studio max, clearly more than enough for our needs. They have subsequently gone on the offensive to force customers into the switch.The business environment is difficult, so our staff numbers have reduced to 5 staff including me.
We feel that Autodesk have set up their system to trip up legitimate customers and blackmail them into purchasing software. That certainly did not justify being bullied into making a purchase we do not want. After all, we have several more perpetual seats than staff. Any breach was not intentional. We informed Autodesk they were being totally unreasonable.
I trust that through this message, the BSA will recognise that law-abiding Malaysian companies should not fall foul to American big business bullying and corrupt practices.I am essentially my wife's IT department for her sole proprietorship interior design/drafting business. I would welcome BSA to visit our offices after the current lockdown to verify compliance of all our software. The Singapore office has tried to help and has been very civil unlike the US Head Office.I reject Autodesk's mischievous claims, threats and bullying tactics and hope that the BSA recognise that this behaviour cannot be tolerated in our market or anywhere globally. They have claimed we have also been unprofessional, when we have been in regular contact with their Singapore office with email copies sent to Autodesk Licencing Department in California.

Here's hoping the capitalist system results in a lower-priced competitor building a better mousetrap than old, bloated AutoCAD. I actually bought a copy of Win7 and hunted down those drivers - took over 2 weeks to get it (near-)fully operational, due to the proprietary nature of laptop hardware.This whole situation sucks! Thank you very little, Autodesk! I hope you lose the low-end LT business completely, because you just screwed over all the small businesses that use LT. I already did that once, about 4 years ago, when I get her other laptop that had the awful Windows 8 pre-installed. (Oh yeah, and if you pay for the 3-year subscription, it's still the same annual cost as a 1-year subscription! Why on earth would I give you more money up-front for no benefit to me?)Trying to downgrade the OS on this new laptop will be a royal pain, trying to track down Win7-compatible drivers for USB, LAN, video, sound, DVD, etc. This will also force her to upgrade the version every couple of years (because a subscription is only good for most recent 3 versions), which will force hardware upgrades as well. (That's less than $80/year.) The only reason we were looking to get a new version is because Windows 7 was the last OS to offer XP-compatability, and we just bought a new laptop with Win10 pre-installed.Now Autodesk wants her to have to pay $400 EVERY YEAR (or, even better, $50/month!).
